Woods

Choice of woods

  • All tops are made of quarter sawn Sitka spruce, 18-24 lines per inch
  • Sides are made of quarter sawn walnut
  • Backs are either koa, myrtle, maple, or mahogany, all quarter sawn
  • The headstock/neck block is made of one piece of rock (sugar) maple, lyptus, or mahogany
  • Bridge material is variable. I use a number of highly figured scraps of hardwood from local woodworkers, included are birch and maple burls, yellowheart, bubinga, purpleheart, lyptus, rosewood and some unknowns.
  • Nuts and saddles are of fossil ivory from Alaska
  • Fretboards are made of katalox or ziracote
Interior woods
  • Bracing is Sitka spruce
  • Kerfing is mahogany
  • Linings and flat bracing is walnut or spruce
  • Bridge plates are walnut
  • Heel block is walnut
  • Cutaway brace is maple
I put 3/32 inch pearl dots on the sides of the fretboard at frets 5, 7, 9, 12, and 15.
